All the fireworks you need will be indoors tonight as Ashkenaz presents its patriotic salute to the Fourth of July with Jerry’s Kids playing the music of that most American of bands, the Grateful Dead. You can count on the Kids doing the date-appropriate “U.S. Blues,” but beyond that the band will play whatever feels right at the moment, from Dead favorites (“Eyes of the World,” “Sugar Magnolia”) to songs associated with the Dead (“Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys”), the songs spinning in and out of each other.

Jerry’s Kids retired 11 years ago and before tonight have reunited only twice for one-off shows, although the members have played in various configurations and other bands ever since. The group began as a side band of members of Dead Air. In 1983 the second edition of the Kids was born and played for 18 years until 2001. The 2012 edition of Jerry’s Kids features Phil Coulson and Bustar Culberson on guitars and vocals, keyboard player Scott Fernandez (from Dedicated Maniacs), bassist-singer Duane Day, and drummer Ben Schroeter.
